Fraudulent activity via text messages, phone calls, emails, and mail is on the rise. Public pension funds across the State of Illinois are receiving falsified address changes, direct deposit requests, and applications for benefits in attempts to redirect pension and refund payments. Please know that the LABF staff scrutinizes the validity of all forms submitted and is focused on recognizing and preventing fraud. Below you will find some helpful information regarding some common schemes.
Text Messages
The LABF does not utilize text messaging at this time. If you receive any text messages from the LABF, this is a scam.
Phone Calls
The LABF does not process address or direct deposit changes for retired members or survivors over the phone or any portal. These requests must be submitted in writing and verified by the Fund staff. The LABF does not process benefit applications for members via a phone call or through any third-party vendors. Applications are generated in house and physical copies are mailed to the members for execution. Original applications should be mailed back to the LABF at 321 N Clark St Suite 1300, Chicago, IL 60654-4739. If you received an unsolicited phone call claiming to be the LABF and you are unsure of its authenticity, do not hesitate to contact the LABF at (312) 236-2065 to verify the call.
Emails
The LABF does not generate emails with links asking for personal or financial information. If you receive an email with a link or the ability to DocuSign paperwork relating to your monthly benefit payments, this is a scam.
If you receive a suspicious text message, phone call, email, or mail that claims to be from the LABF that you suspect is a scam, please report this activity to the LABF at (312) 236-2065 immediately. This information may aid in the detection and future prevention of fraudulent activity impacting our members.
